2010 Winter Olympics Maps

With the Winter Olympics fast approaching I'm sure this will be the the first post of many featuring Canadian and Winter Olympics maps.

3D Olympic Venues

Google recently added 3D buildings in Google Earth for all the Winter Olympics venues. Soren of microformats.dk has produced this Google Earth browser tour of all the venues.

To view the tour just press play. This application requires that you have the Google Earth browser plug-in to view the amazing 3D buildings.

Vancouver Sun Winter Olympics Map

The Vancouver Sun has produced a Google Map 'for everything at the 2010 Winter Olympics'.

The map includes sporting venues, complete with schedules and history; government pavilions, other countries' pavilions and houses, sponsor sites and events, transportation lines, road closures, the Flag Walk, the Olympic Line and park and ride facilities.

Cycling Metro Vancouver

This cycling route finder map for Vancouver allows cyclists to search for routes that have such features as minimum elevation gains, minimum air pollution, and minimum distances.

The site has recently been updated to include Olympic venues, venue security road closures (cycling prohibited), Olympic lanes with cycling prohibited and Olympic lanes with open bike lanes.

NBA Transactions on Google Maps

NBA Transaction Flow Charts

Wyn Douglas has created a number of flowcharts that show how every team in the NBA acquired every player. Not happy with that he has imported the flowcharts (one for every NBA team) into Google Maps.

Wyn used the GMap Uploader to upload his flowchart images into the Google Maps API. The Gmap Uploader is a service that allows you to upload any map or image you want into the Google Maps interface.

Because Wyn Douglas used the GMaps Uploader to create his Google Maps based flowcharts viewers can zoom in and pan each of the flowcharts as they could a normal Google Map.

One of the great advantages of the GMaps Uploader is that you can also add map markers and information windows to a created map. Wyn hasn't done that with any of his flowcharts, so I've created an example map of how the NBA Transaction Maps could be developed.

My map uses Wyn's Boston flowchart map but I've created a map sidebar with a few links that will zoom the map to particular players' names. The map also includes a map marker above Ray Allen. If you click on the marker it will open an information window with a brief profile of the player.

Map of Middle Earth in New Zealand

This Spanish website has been busy mapping the locations used in The Lord of the Rings films shot in New Zealand.

The site has embedded a Google My Map of all the locations they have discovered. They have also included a brief round-up of each location, giving the lat/long coordinates and a description of how to access the location (in Spanish).

JavaScript to Add a Google Map

Addmap.js

Addmap.js is a JavaScript that analyses text on a web page to find geographical locations and then adds a Google Map showing the locations. The script adds a Google Static Map to a web page and a list of the found locations within the page.

To use the script you just need to add your own Google Maps API key and to place the text you want mapped within a div element with an id of 'content'.

The JavaScript is very easy to add to a page. I've created an example, The Start of the Second World War, using some text from Wikipedia. Feel free to view the source of the page and cut & paste to your heart's content.

Google Map of the World's Art

GeocodedArt

GeocodedArt is a new website that is busy mapping the world's fine art paintings. The geocodedArt database contains over 1,000 images of identifiable places all over the world.

The images are organized and displayed using Google Maps and Bing Maps and are cross-indexed by artist. It is possible to search the database by artist name, painting name or by location.

This is a great way of exploring the world's art. Hint - I'd really like a mobile phone application of this to show you paintings of views that are near your current location.
