Google Map of London's Expensive Homes

Dwellings by Council Tax Map - Bands F,G,H

CASA's Map Tube has been used to visualise the number of houses in different council tax bands in London. The council tax is the name for local authority taxation in the UK.

The level of tax that citizens pay is based on the value of their homes. Band A homes are the cheapest properties and therefore pay the least in local taxation, Band H homes are the most expensive properties and the owners in Band H are required to pay more in council tax.

The Council Tax Maps overlay the number of properties in different tax bands over a map of London. The resulting choropleth maps show which areas of London have the most expensive and the cheapest houses.

One of the great features of Map Tube is that you can add different data sets to the map. This means that you can compare cost of housing in different areas in London to other data sets such as crime, drug use and health.

Check out the Map Tube search option to browse the available overlays.

Vacant NYC

New York charity Picture the Homeless is using the Usahidi report mapping system to help identify the city's vacant properties.

Picture the Homeless claim that the city spends hundreds of millions of dollars a year on providing shelter to the homeless whilst perfectly good property languishes in the hands of private landlords and city agencies. The charity want New Yorkers to use Vacant NYC to map the property going to waste in their neighborhoods.

It is possible to report a vacant lot or property by e-mail, text message, by Twitter or by filling in a short form. All reports submitted will be added to the Vacant NYC Google Map. By plotting the vacant properties of New York Picture the Homeless hope to prove that there is enough property going to waste to make a real difference in the NYC housing market.

Using Google Base with Google Maps

The Big Property List

Google Maps offers the option to search for real estate in a number of countries now. The data for properties shown on Google Maps actually comes from Google Base. This of course means that anyone can set up their own website to also access these real estate listings using the Google Base API. That is exactly what The Big Property List have done.

One of the major criticisms of Google Maps' real estate option is that users actually want to view property listings in a list format. The Big Property List have tackled this criticism head-on by creating a familiar portal style listings interface for real estate in the UK.

The home page of the site includes a map so that users can quickly click on the region that they want to search. The properties for that region are then shown in a familiar list style. It is possible to refine the search by type of property, price range and number of bedrooms.

When you click on a property you are then taken to a dedicated page containing the full property details and a Google Map showing the location of the property.

Toronto Google Maps Mashup Round-up

Toronto Star: Map of the Week - Car Ownership

This week's Toronto Star Google Maps mashup is a map that shows car ownership in the Greater Toronto Area (although the title of the map, 'GTA Car Ownership Map', did make me wonder if it was a map of people who owned stolen cars).

The map is a heat map of car ownership as a percentage of households, using data from the 2006 census. The Map of the Week blog has an interesting analysis of the data. The analysis show a correlation between car ownership and income. The map also show some correlation between good public transportation links and low car ownership.
