New York Restaurant Heatmaps

Concentration of American restaurants in New York

Dan K's Blog has followed up a recent post on Heatmap of Restaurants in New York with a new post on Cuisine Concentration in New York City.

The original post was interesting in showing the restaurant density in New York City. However the maps don't reveal anything too surprising - the highest density of restaurants appear to be in those areas that you would kind of expect to see high numbers of restaurants.

The Cuisine Concentration in New York City heatmaps are much more interesting to me. The maps show the concentration of American, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Mexican, Caribbean, Korean, Spanish, Thai and Italian restaurants in the Big Apple.

It might just be me but I find it fascinating being able to view where different types of restaurants are concentrated in the city. The maps are quite useful as well. If you fancy a certain type of cuisine you can consult the heat maps to find out the areas in New York that you should visit.

Find Lunch Deals with Google Maps

It is lunch time and you want to eat. Wouldn't it be great if you could turn on your phone and view nearby restaurants with great lunch-time deals?

Wo-Wollen-Wir-Essen.de (where shall we eat?) is a German Google Maps based website and mobile application that does exactly that. Using the app you can quickly see and browse through local restaurants' lunchtime offers on a handy Google Map.

Currently the site has lots of suggestions for where you can eat during the day in Hamburg. Coverage outside Hamburg is currently patchy but I'm sure that will improve as the app's popularity grows.

It's Friday - Go For a F..king Drink

If swearing offends you then you should avoid Where the F..k Should I Go for a Drink? However if you want some blunt advice about where you can get a nearby drink then carry on ...

If you share your location with Where the F..k Should I Go for a Drink? you will be shown a Google Map of your current location with directions to a nearby bar or pub. Above the map is a large question that gives the name of your suggested local watering hole. I've photoshopped out the swearing in the screenshot above but I think you can still get the drift.

If you click on the named bar in the map headline you can visit the suggested pub's website. If the suggested pub doesn't please you then you can click to get alternative recommendations.

Worldwide Google Map Restaurant Guide

iEatDb is a Google Maps guide to nearby restaurants.

The application initially finds the nearest restaurants based on your current location. To find restaurants at a different location you just need to drag the orange map marker to a new spot on the map.

The application seems to work in most countries in the world so I'm guessing it is using the Google Places API to find nearby restaurants. Users of the map can add their own reviews and comments for restaurants and can even add images of the restaurant or the food on offer.

Restaurant Inspections on Google Maps

The Seattle Food Inspection Map lets you examine the food inspection ratings for Seattle restaurants.

The map includes a nice slider function that allows you to search for restaurants in Seattle based on the inspection score. For example, you can set the slider to show only restaurants that have a score between 0-45 (a score of over 45 indicating a poor inspection).

Alternatively you could search for restaurants that you might want to avoid by setting the slider to only show restaurants with a score over 45.

NYC BigMaps have used the Your Mapper map creation tool to map restaurant inspections and 311 service calls in New York City.

The restaurant inspections map displays New York City Department of Health inspections across 5 boroughs since Jan 2008 (22,440 restaurants). You can search the map by category, date range, keyword, and location. The map then displays restaurants on the map at the location you searched.

Green map markers indicate restaurants with no health violations.

Local Foods & Dishes on Google Maps

One of the great joys of travelling is discovering (and tasting) the local and regional foods and dishes of the places you visit.

If you ever get the chance to travel around England then I recommend you consult The Food Map of England and the UK Food Tourism website.

The Food Map of England is a Google Map that shows the local and regional specialities of food throughout England. For example, if you visit Cheshire, The Food Map of England shows you that Cheshire Onion Pie, Cheshire Lamb Crumble, Cheshire Cheese and Cheshire Pork Pie are all local delicacies that you might want to try.

After finding the local dishes on offer with The Food Map of England you can then consult the UK Food Tourism website to discover local restaurants, and local food markets and festivals. The UK Food Tourism website contains a number of regional Google Maps that allow you to discover locally recommended food centres throughout the UK.

London Coffee on Google Maps

London Coffee Map

I've started playing with the Places Library in the Google Maps API.

One feature of the library is that it lets you load venues that match a particular name. I've used this feature to show the locations of cafes belonging to the bigger coffee chains in London.

The London Coffee Map lets you find cafes run by the Monmouth Coffee Company, Starbucks, Costa Coffee and Caffe Nero. If you click on a marker you can view the cafe's Google Places rating and its telephone number.
